Hosta’s and Daylilies

Problem: Hosta and daylilies were all on one side, with weeds taking over the left side.

Solution: The garden was edged, weeded, and plants were divided and redistributed through the garden. A dark premium mulch was installed.

Overgrown Shrubs

Problem: Shrubs had overtaken the house

Solution: The dwarf Alberta spruce can’t be trimmed down, so they were removed. The yew, rhododendron, forsythia and rose bush were trimmed down below the windows. The burning bush was trimmed down 1/3 and a natural edge cut around it, finished off with mulch.

Overgrown Garden

Problem: Garden was overtaken with shasta daisies, iris and rudbeckia. They had overgrown all of the other perennials.

Solution: All of the perennials were removed, with smaller divisions replanted. This is a fall picture, so they were cut back. Added in small shrubs to the center to give year-round interest and more structure as it growss (dwarf spirea, azalea ‘karens’ & bush roses) Hosta was removed as it was burning in the full sun. The dappled willow in the background was given a good trim.

New house with no privacy

Problem: The homeowner wanted privacy but also didn’t want to feel fortressed in with large shrubs or a fence

Solution: We installed holmstrup arborvitae, which is a small, slow growing variety that will only get 8-10′ tall arranged in a way to give privacy without a hedged in feel.

Weedy Backyard

Problem: Full shade area that is hard to mow and overtaken with weeds.

Solution: We removed all the weeds, cut in a natural edge and added in plants that would brighten up the shady spot. Heuchera, lamium, astilbe, with bugbane and tall Astilbe chinensis for the back corner.
